Why do wargamers think Strategy is the key to victory in every thing(including in Wars and Military matters)?
Victory in combat incorporates skill, luck, technology, and small unit tactics, war requires a bullet proof strategy to be successful. Luck can be a simple mistake made by the enemy that gives an advantage to your group, like the Battle of Midway, or it can simply be that most of the bullets shot by the enemy missed your men and their mortars didn't hit your guys, skill of the troops ensure that your troops will use their tactics faster and more efficient than your enemies, tactics are the are the trade in which the troops follow to close with and destroy their enemy or rappel their attack, and technology helps in finding your enemy, destroying your enemy, and ensuring your survival. War is based on more than one or hundred battles, it's based on making that one or a hundred battles count, by attacking and exploiting your enemies weaknesses. The U.S. is the last standing superpower in the world, and deploys the strongest military on the planet, but we have been involved in a decade long war in two 3rd world countries. Guerrilla warfare is meant to slow down the battle rhythm of the enemy, exhaust his troops and resources, and lower moral, and turn the oppositions society against it's government. VietCong knew that they couldn't win against U.S. Marines, but by controlling Hue City for a few days and having the press document it, to fuel protest of U.S. involvement in South Vietnam caused us the war, U.S. Marines never lost a battle in Vietnam, they're skills could not be matched on the battlefield, but the strategy of having the U.S. citizens watch TV and see that American forces are fighting insurgents in major cities in South Vietnam made it seem that America was losing and could not win. Island hoping campaign, the strategy, attack the islands with the airfields and logistics, with this the islands that were not attack, but relied on the islands that were, starved to death without the supplies from the islands that had airfields and resources under U.S. control. to end Taliban funding, you must secure the cities with poppy fields, to secure all cities in Iraq, you must control the sunni triangle in the Al Ambar province, Taliban and Al Qaeda must slow down the U.S. in rebuilding the Afghan and Iraqi governments to keep them in a prolong war that will ultimatly lose support from the American people, strategy, hide in the shadows and set up IED's to insure low moral from the soiety and troops. How do you prevent countries to aid you in the War on Terror, bomb there subways, strategy bomb Madrid subway to have the Spainish government pull out of Afghanistan. the strategy of terrorism is fear. Doesn't matter how many Islamic militants murder their people, so long as they show U.S. bombs creating collateral damage. So as you can see, combat is the actual fighting of two forces on the battlefield, the strategy, is the plan on where to attack, thus resulting into a victory. Combat relies on skill, technology, and to a certain extent luck, but to win a war, strategy is everything.
