Learning "extra skills" in a foreign country and language?

Learning hands-on things like arts/crafts and cooking usually do not require a lot of difficult language to understand, as you're mostly looking at things and copying techniques. It could vary from activity to activity, like if you're acting a splay out you know to be able to understand the story in a certain language, or you need to understand the instructors during dance class.
