How can I gain information about my fathers death?

When I was 12 years old my father died in a car accident. He left behind a wife and 3 kids. In what I can only describe as an attempt by my mother to not emotional hurt me, all details surrounding the accident were left out. I am 19 now and in search to find out exactly what happened. Please note that I would like much more in depth details that what shows up on his certificate of death. Perhaps police reports of the accident? Locating a paramedic that arrived at the scene? Newspaper articles? Any advice is greatly appreciated.
