Gun Bros Mastery XP Bonuses?

In the iPod App, Gun Bros., you can master guns to get XP bonuses, but are these bonuses only active when you are using that specific gun you mastered, or when you master the gun do you always have it's XP bonus, and then all your bonuses build up?
